Ralph William Yeager, age 96, of Brainerd, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at his home. Ralph was born at home in Wadena County to Thomas & Ida (Lindeman) Yeager on February 23, 1922. He lived as a child with his family in the Walker Hackensack area called Poverty Hill. At 16, he joined the CCC’s and worked on the Itasca State Park project. At 18, he joined the Army National Guard, when WWII broke out his unit was activated, and he volunteered to be a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne (this was the very first paratroopers). He spent 2 ½ years in the European Theater and made 13 jumps. After returning from the war, Ralph met Lois Vanderhoof in Fairview, MT and they were married on June 18, 1949, they lived in Merrifield the remainder of his life.
He built and ran a family resort, on Lower Mission Lake. He raised turkeys, delivered mail, and ran a school bus company. He was an active member of Ossipee Community Church, the VFW and the American Legion. Before and after retirement he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, poker and several veterans’ groups. Ralph was devoted to his family and a true patriot.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years, Lois; children: Thomas (Loree) of Nisswa, Leon (Carol Ann) of Merrifield, Suzanne (Karlo) Goerges of Pequot Lakes, and Shirley (Hank) Collins of Merrifield; sisters-in-law, Ruth Yeager and Helen Snedigar; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Ralph is preceded in Death by his parents; 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
A memorial service celebrating Ralph’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11AM at Ossipee Community Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Center Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the charity of your choice.
