Lonnie R. Johnson was born April 6, 1939 to Lillian (Bendson) and Gordon Johnson in Pine River Village. He was raised on a farm in Leader. He graduated from Staples High School in 1956. He entered the US Army in 1958 and served in Korea. Lonnie was united in marriage to Judy Junker on November 3, 1962 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Motley. They enjoyed over 55 ½ years of married life. They were blessed with 2 children and 7 grandchildren. Lonnie enjoyed working in the saw mill at a very young age with his horse, Trigger. He also worked for many road construction companies traveling each summer throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. He worked at Control Data in the cities and then opened up his own sheet metal shop in Staples and then again years later at his home. Lonnie enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, hunting, 4 wheeling, woodworking and restoring tractors. He loved watching his kids and grandchildren play sports. He especially loved attending weekly Friday night “safety meetings” with his good friends. He will be remembered for always having a smile on his face, his gentle and loving ways, and his witty personality. He would never complain and would always say “he was just about perfect”.
