Sally Elizabeth Peterson, age 95, of Brainerd, passed away on Friday May 4, 2018. Sally was born on July 29, 1922 in a farm house in Sibley County, MN to Arthur and Frieda (Schuete) Bahr.
Sally loved school and was a very good student with excellent spelling, reading and arithmetic skills and beautiful handwriting. She actually rode the plow horse “Polly” through the deep snow to school. When her mother became ill at a very young age, Sally had to stop going to school and help at home during hard times. Much later in life, after raising two children and still working, she attended night school and proudly received her high school diploma.
Sally met Charles during WWII years near Brainerd, and they married on June 11, 1945. Together they worked hard at several jobs, including running a small fishing resort, and dairy farming for a while. Over the years they added on to their little cabin on Nokay Lake. Together they were active in the Nokay Lake Country School, 4-H club and Trinity Lutheran Church, proudly raising their two children, Jane and Joel. Sally worked for 17 years at the Brainerd State Hospital as a dining room coordinator, a mission for her to help the residents, “her kids” with a huge loving heart. She was an artist with flowers, decorating and hospitality. Sally loved her family and enjoyed traveling and visiting with them. There were many train trips adventures “out west” to Washington to see her sister Viola, and her Carlson kids. Many times, she would drive up to the garage with a polka tune thundering from the car after a trip to Winthrop to see Ilo and Wilmer. Brother Gene made great trips to Branson possible with his new van full of brothers and sisters. Sally was so proud of her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sally is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Fireda Bahr; husband, Charles; sisters: Ilo Riebe, Viola Carlson and Elsie Johnson; brothers Melvin and Jerome.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jane (Iver) Halverson and Joel (Karina) Peterson; grandchildren, Jason and Christian; great-grandchildren: Hadyn, Madisyn, Jalyn and Reece; brothers: Eugene Bahr and Tom Bahr; sister, Judy Young; many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Sally will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 11AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the service, Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
