Obituary for Kimberly Rhett

Kimberly Mary Rhett, 58, of Pillager, passed away at home on April 23rd, 2018 after a 25 year battle with cancer. Kim was born to Gary and Mae Busko in Ephrata, Washington on February 23rd, 1960. Growing up, she lived in many places: Washington, Texas, California, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, before finally settling in Wisconsin, where she graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1978. After graduation, she joined the US Navy and shortly thereafter was stationed in Misawa, Japan where she met her future husband Elbert (Tom) Rhett. They were married on October 16th, 1982 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rhinelander, and moved to Oxnard, CA after being stationed at Port Hueneme Naval Base. Their two sons (Brian and Matthew) and daughter (Kara) were born in California, and in 1989 they moved to Silverdale, WA for Tom’s final duty station. Tom retired in 1992, and they moved to Pillager; their home for the last 26 years.

Kim went to work for First American Bank (Bremer) in 1993, where she worked until retiring in 2016 for medical reasons. That same year, she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley, where she served on the parish council and taught religious education. She was a strong supporter of both Susan G Komen Race for a Cure and Relay for Life, where her teams “Fight for the Girls” and “Kim’s Cancer Crusaders” were always a top fundraiser. She was also active with scouting, serving as both a troop leader and cookie Mom for her daughter’s troop.

Kim shared a love of gardening and travel with her husband. In the spring and summer, it was rare for her desk to not be adorned with beautiful flowers from her garden, and her scrapbooks are bursting at the seams with pictures of the beautiful places to which they traveled together. She especially loved visiting her children and grandchildren.

Kim is survived by her husband Tom of 35 years, sons, Brian of Chubbuck, Idaho, Matthew of Land O’Lakes, Florida, daughter, Kara of Mountlake Terrace, Washington, stepdaughters, Kim Stinson of Juliaetta, Idaho, Sondie (Houston) Richardson of Hillsboro, Oregon. Kim has two grandchildren, Isabella and Bailey. Parents Gary and Mae Busko of Eagle River, Wisconsin, sister, Kathy (Pete) Roth of Wausau, Wisconsin, brothers, Ken (Denise) Busko of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Kevin (Heidi) Busko of St. Paul. Sisters-in-laws are Leora Cash of Lewiston, Idaho, Charolette Smith of Lewiston, Dorothy Heitter of Lewiston, Patty (Jim) Wood of Lewiston. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and aunt.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 28th, at 11 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Friday, April 27th at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home – BAXTER CHAPEL, and at the church an hour before the mass on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure or St Michael’s Building Fund.
